For the sake of preparing the dogs that were used for the sake of test flights, the Soviets confined the subjects in small boxes of decreasing size for periods of between 15 and 20 days at a time. This was designed to simulate spending time inside the small safety modules that would housed them for the duration of their flights. Laika’s last moments on earth were spent strapped into a windowless Soviet rocket awaiting lift off. The stray dog had enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame in 1957, having been plucked from a Moscow street, hastily trained and blasted into space. That ill-fated mission resulted in Laika overheating and dying five hours into the flight.
